No doubt, the Yorubas in general and the Ilaje people in particular, have some of the richest cultures and tradition in the whole of Africa. The beauty of the Ilaje culture and tradition manifests in all areas of the peoples lives -from their unique dialect to their mode of dressing, their greetings;to their belief system.Their traditional practices such as festivals, rituals , crafts , carvings , literature and occupational activities are uniquely amazing . As we all know , culture is the set of of distinctive spiritual , material , intellectual and emotional features of a society or a social group.
Culture and tradition therefore are the true identity that distinguishes a group of people other groups of people. Many years ago, before the intrusion of foreign ways of life to the African society, our elders were pillars of the African culture and tradition while our youths,as ambassadors of of their societies, were made to imbibe our rich cultural traditions and practices. Our rich cultures and traditions started to experience some modifications following contact with the European culture during the era of of colonization.
By 1900,the British colonial government had taken direct control of Nigeria and as a consequence ,some Nigerians started embracing the British ways of life, including adopting their language ,mode of dressing ;mode of greeting;their religion;their marriage and legal system, including adopting their names.Gradually, the African culture and tradition began to diminish like a burning candle stick suffering from a cool breeze of air.
With civilization sweeping through our contemporary world, the African culture and tradition have been declining in originality as many of our people , especially youths, now prefer to identify with foreign ways of life to the detriment of the African culture . Perhaps the greatest damage done to our culture and tradition in this part of the world,is the issue of the negative impacts of technological advancement of the world.Everyday in this country, our youths spend hours watching foreign movies which often corrupt their minds by selling or dishing out foreign ideas and beliefs to them.
As a consequence, many do get carried away by what they watch from foreign movies and thereby choosing to speak, sing, dress and act the foreigners they had watched on television screens or movies. However, social media contribute more to the decline in the African culture and tradition .
African youths and by extension, the Ilaje youths now prefer to dress the way they see foreign celebrities dress;the boys would sag down their crazy jeans while the girls usually flaunt their navels and breast in seen _ through skimpy dresses, in the name of civilization. This informs why there is moral decadence in our society today.
The way out of this silly menace is for the home to restrict our youths access to phone use;the internet and watching of foreign films. In addition, traditional institutions should intensify effort at ensuring that our culture and tradition are being preserved for future generations.
