Ilaje elderstateman chief olusola oke once stated that the culture of Ilaje people is the richest in the world. This,at first, got me agitated as I began to understudy the Ilaje cultures and tradition with a view to unravel the richness in it. After weeks of interviewing elders of land on our cultural heritage as a race, i soon discovered the beauty in our culture and tradition.
The Yoruba people in general and the Ilaje race in particular, have very rich cultures and tradition which make them one of the most unique groups of people in the whole world. The Ilaje people have a very rich cultural heritage as seen in their unique dialect; their mode of dressing; their locally made dishes and delicacies; their mode of greeting; their ideologies;their traditional practices and their unique occupation as a sub group of the Yoruba ethnic group.

I learnt recently that, the Biripo, Asiko and juju brands or genres are indigenous to Ilaje people. I also got to know that, ode_ Etikan,ode_ mahin,ode_ugbo and Agerige once had the most beautiful and colourful masquerades in West Africa. Ayetoro community was once the epi_centre of communism in  African. Where are those ancient beauties and heritage?          However, it is  regrettable that many of the Ilaje aspects is on the part of wane and ruin due to the powerful wind of civilization being spread by the advancement in technology.

Following the successful colonization of African states in the 19th century, the African culture did had a contact with foreign culture which eventually led to some cultural modifications. Our belief system, our mode of dressing, our mode of greeting, ideologies and others got affected. Meanwhile, advancement in technology has made foreign ways of life accessible on the television screens; the internet and social media.

Nevertheless, as the globalised world gets civilized through imbibing ideas and cultures which are termed global best practices. The African children, including the Ilaje youths are now sacrificing our rich cultural heritage for the western culture which in most cases, negate African personality. Today in Ilajeland an average Ilaje child or youth sees traditionalists as evil_doers or idol worshipers who should be otracized and ex_communicated. What a mental slavery? As Ilaje boy, if you don't sag or wear crazy jeans, you are seen as being uncivilized and unexposed. Our girls in the name of civilization either flaunt their breasts braless or wear jumper _dresses to reveal their novels.
To this end,as we are aware that damage done to our culture and tradition by civilization is great,we certainly need to instill in our children the mentality that the African culture is the richest in the world and as a result must be preserved at all times.
