AFROSKY ESSAY COMPETITION 2025 (IG) 018

OUR CULTURE AND TRADITION IN THE FACE OF CIVILIZATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT

Culture and tradition are the lifeblood of any societies or communities. They denote the collective beliefs, morals, customs and social activities of a society. They provide rooms for identification of an individual, society, family and a region. These are the language we speak, mode of dressing, manner of communication, traditional festivals and many more. However, these cherished elements of a society or a region are seen to be challenged by modern ways which are civilization and technological advancement.

Technological advancement has changed many aspects of life, from the way we communicate, the way of our dance, the songs etc,are seen being changed. Also the traditional ceremonies that bring people together are being replaced or abandoned completely for modern lifestyles often sourced from foreign cultures.

Furthermore, civilization also bring about changes in the way we speak as said earlier. Take, for instance, people of nowadays are pleased speaking global language like the English language than to speak their own indigenous tongues or languages. There are some people in this land (the Ilaje land) that cannot speak or even understand the Ilaje language and they live in Ilaje land. Not that they are just Ilaje born, they also reside in Ilaje land but cannot speak the language or tongue of their land because they prefer the foreign language (e.g. English) to their own native tongue which they considered archaic or irrelevant with the modern world.

Nevertheless our cultural ceremonies or traditional festivals. Some of them are tend to be erased by civilization and technological advancement. Some certain festivals are no longer being held because of the cost of civilization. They believed that the long withheld festivals are no longer relevant and they abandoned it for the cost of civilization. Our musics and dancing steps are also seen suffering to thrive because we choose modern lifestyles, that is, the type of songs and the dancing steps. Some foreign attitudes are also seen to be adapted, like the way we greet, especially elderly ones are now in the forms of other cultures and ways.

However, it is important to know that civilization and technological advancement are not enemies of cultures and tradition. If used not in the sensible ways, it may seen as enemies, but if it is used wisely, it will help to promote and preserve our culture and traditions. Take for instance, technology can be used for recording traditional ceremonies and stream them online for children in urban or diaspora.

In conclusion, educational apps can be used to teach our culture and tradition to new audience globally ranging from our manner of greeting, ways of dancing, type of songs and respecting attitude. As we all know that technology has dominated this world, it is important for us to adapt to this modernization wisely. We should encourage our local language, traditional ceremonies and more, so that civilization and technological advancement will not erase our culture and tradition. We can thrive in this modern world without forgetting who we are.
