CRISTIANO RONALDO WAS TAGGED A BETRAYAL BY ITALIAN MEDIA.
Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of betraying Juventus by the Italian media after turning his back on the ball as the Serie A giants crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday.
Juventus were Thrown out by Porto on away goals on a dramatic night in Turin after their last-16 tie ended 4-4.
Ronaldo turned his back on Sergio Oliveira's decisive 115th-minute free kick which went through his legs in the Juventus wall and beat Goalie Wojciech Szczesny.
Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport used the headline “Betrayed by Ronaldo” on their front page on Wednesday morning
Former England manager Fabio Capello, who was working as a pundit for Italian TV, also singled out Ronaldo and said the Portugal star made an “unforgivable error”.
Capello said: “That was an unforgivable error. In my day, you chose the players who went into the wall and they couldn’t be someone afraid of the ball. They were scared of the ball and jumped away from it, turning their backs. That’s unforgivable.”
Newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport said the defeat is “another Champions League disaster” for Juventus, who signed Ronaldo on a four-year £99.2million contract in 2018 in a bid to conquer Europe.
Juventus were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals in Ronaldo’s first season at the club and they have been dumped out at the last-16 stage in back-to-back seasons after losing to Lyon last year.
