Oakland Athletics right-hander Chris Bassitt is conscious after exiting Tuesday's game when struck in the head by a line drive in the second inning against the Chicago White Sox, the A's announced.
"Chris Bassitt is conscious and aware, and is on his way to the hospital," Oakland said in a statement shortly after the incident. "We will provide additional information when possible."
Bassitt fell to the ground after being hit by a 100 mph comebacker off Brian Goodwin's bat. Trainers rushed to the mound to assist Bassitt, who appeared to have been hit near the right ear. Bassitt held a towel to his bloody face before medics took him off the field on a cart.
A's manager Bob Melvin said Bassitt was conscious the entire time, and that the team will know more about potential fractures following a scan Tuesday night.
"We don't think the eye is a problem at this point," Melvin said. "It felt like it was below it. He's got some cuts. They had to do some stitches."
Reliever Burch Smith took over for Bassitt, who is 12-3 with a 3.06 ERA this season. The White Sox went on to win 9-0 over the A's.
