Soldiers in the west African nation of Guinea-Bissau say they have seized power from the civilian government and arrested incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
A spokesman for the junta said the military had closed the border, imposed a curfew, and suspended "all of the institutions of the Republic of Guinea Bissau". Soldiers appeared on the main road leading to the presidential palace. The coup comes just a day before the country was due to announce the results of a closely contested presidential election.
