DID YOU KNOW ❓
From 1850 - 1860, Harriet Tubman led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom on secret routes known as the Underground Railroad. She guided them from the plantations of the south to the free states in the North.
When the Fugitive Slave Law was passed in the United States, it meant escaped slaves could be captured and returned to the plantations in the South. This is what led Harriet Tubman to instead take the freed slaves to Canada, where slavery was already prohibited. Once they crossed the border they were free and didn't worry about being captured and taken to the south.
She gained the nickname, 'Moses' because of what she was doing to free her people.
Harriet Tubman's Quotes
“If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If there's shouting after you, keep going. Don't ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.”
