The Agbo festival of culture taking place at my maternal home town Atoyo in ijebu land of ogun state occur every first day of the new year. A merry occasion where the fisher man is celebrated this is the primary occupation of the people resident in Atoyo the agbo masquerade parades the town with the crocodile symbol proudly displayed on it's head the creature of the swamp is highly respected and the meat remains a taboo for all descendants of the founder of this ancient town as the legend is told of how he was rescued and raised by a brood of crocodiles hence the reverence accorded to this magnificent creatures that rules the river.
On the day of celebration the towns people line up to receive blessings from their ancestors who visit them in the form of the agbo masquerade and the little children run after the drummers and the custodians of the culture of the peace loving folks of Atoyo town. ????
I was a prime guest at this years event which took place on the first day of January 2022 indeed the occasion remains an intricate event in my memory as I thoroughly enjoyed myself with the roasted yam and bush meat offered to me with a fresh palm wine gourd consumed by me and my husband. Looking forward to another visit next year same day same time.????????????????
