Nigerian football is in mourning following the passing of Super Eagles goalkeeping legend, Peter Rufai, who died in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the age of 61.
Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” had reportedly been battling a prolonged illness that kept him away from public life in recent years. His death was confirmed by Radio Nigeria and BSNSports.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, Rufai earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles. He featured in two FIFA World Cups and was instrumental in Nigeria’s historic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.
Throughout his illustrious club career, he played for several teams across Europe, including Stationery Stores in Nigeria and Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands.
His passing comes on a tragic day for global football, following closely on the heels of reports confirming the death of Portuguese international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in a car crash.
Peter Rufai’s legacy as a national hero and football pioneer will be remembered by fans across generations.
