Pakistan's parliament elected a new prime minister: Shehbaz Sharif is known the be more friendly towards the west. Days before then prime minister Imran Khan was ousted, steet protests and mass resignations from lawyers caused a political crisis in the country.
Sharif's election ends a week-long constitutional confrontation that reached its climax on Sunday when Khan lost a no-confidence vote. Although the nuclear-armed nation Pakistan is likely to remain prone to political and economic turbulence.
Sharif has a reputation as an effective administrator more than as a politician. He is the younger brother of three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Analysts say Shehbaz, unlike Nawaz, enjoys amicable relations with Pakistan's military, which traditionally controls foreign and defense policy in the country of 220 million people.
After the vote, Sharif vowed to tackle economic problems. "The economic challenges are huge, and we need to make a way out of these troubles. We will have to shed sweat and blood to revive the economy," said Shehbaz in a speech after the election.
